Abstract

Diagnosis of bone fracture and assessment of its repair state by the characteristics of sound propagation through the bone has long been studied. An impact testing system for reliable estimation of mechanical transfer function has been developed. The results of the experiments presented, demonstrate the ability of this method to detect both discontinuity and changes in material properties of members in vitro. The prospect of an in vivo nondestructive mechanical assessment of bone fracture healing seems promising.
