Abstract

LGBT women become mothers in different ways, both before and after coming out. LGBT mothers are still subject to bias and discrimination on the basis of their sexual and gender identities, and LGBT mothers with mental health diagnoses may face added burden of stigma related to mental illness. This chapter describes several case examples of issues that may arise for these mothers. Both LGBT mothers and their children can benefit from affirming treatment services and peer supports.
