Abstract

L-dopa was found to induce the release of pancreatic glucagon as well as growth hormone in rhesus monkeys. This release of glucagon was unaffected by either α - or β-adrenergic blockade and may be the result of direct dopaminergic stimulation of the pancreas. The resultant hyperglycemia may be important in explaining the clinical observation of worsening of diabetic control in parkinsonian diabetic patients on L-dopa therapy.
