Abstract

Full-body computed tomography (CT) scans are being heavily advertised to the public, with promises of peace of mind and early disease detection for otherwise symptomless patients. Detractors cite a lack of supporting data, questionable accuracy, and significant price - out-of-pocket costs sometimes top $1,000 per scan as concerns. What is the diagnostic value of these scans? What evidence supports their use? How should primary-care physicians address this issue if approached by their patients?
