Abstract
Prompt recognition of the magnitude of articular damage is essential for optimal management of digital joint injuries. Basic to this concept is the need to differentiate injuries that can be successfully treated by closed techniques from those that require surgery. Following an accurate restoration of the damaged joint, recovery of function depends on careful immobilization in a protective position and, whenever possible, early joint mobilization. Precise primary care is the key to the prevention of disabling joint contractures.
