Abstract

Four decades ago, Jeffrey Moussaieff Masson published his sensational book, The Assault on Truth: Freud's Suppression of the Seduction Theory (1984a). The current essay is a reappraisal of Masson's life drama and an appraisal of psychoanalysis as a method and theory. It is my purpose to parse the pith and pitch of Masson's predication about seduction, procured by his perusing a particular letter Freud sent Fliess in 1897.
