Abstract

Visitors may be involved in organism transmission in healthcare settings; however, data published on this topic is limited. This chapter reviews situations in which visitor-associated infection transmission has occurred and describes the potential role of visitors in the transmission of organisms that can lead to outbreaks. The implementation of transmission-based precautions among visitors may be appropriate in some situations and can be adapted from those used among healthcare personnel. The practical and ethical challenges regarding the use of these precautions among visitors are also discussed.
