Abstract

Iron overload is a progressive accumulation of iron in vital organs (e.g., liver, heart, pancreas, and endocrine organs) caused by an excess of systemic iron. When untreated, iron overload increases the risk of liver cirrhosis, heart failure, diabetes mellitus, osteoporosis, hypogonadism, and neurodegenerative symptoms. These potentially fatal complications are preventable by iron depletion therapies.
