Abstract

Gender identity references people’s internal sense of their own sex. Transgender and gender non-binary (TGNB) people have gender identities that are not aligned with the sex recorded at birth. Approximately 0.6% of the adult population is TGNB. In the next iteration of the International Classification of Diseases (ICD-11), being TGNB will be given the sexual health label, “gender incongruence” rather the mental health label “gender dysphoria,” the latter is in use even though being TGNB is not a mental health concern. With ever stronger data regarding the biological underpinnings to gender identity, the model of being TGNB has shifted toward prioritizing changing other parts of the body to match gender identity for people who seek such intervention. Recognition of the model among general providers is needed to expand access to medical care for TGNB people outside of specialized centers.
