Abstract

Epidemiology Intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH) is defined as acute, spontaneous, non-traumatic extravasation of blood into the brain parenchyma which may extend to the ventricular system and the subarachnoid space. ICH is responsible for 10-15% of stroke cases in the USA and up to 20-30% in Asian populations Worldwide incidence is 10-20 cases per 100 000 people. The incidence doubles with each decade of life above 45 years. Despite all advances in management and neurocritical care, ICH remains the least treatable form of stroke and therefore carries the highest risk of severe morbidity and mortality compared to ischemic stroke or subarachnoid hemorrhage.
