Abstract

The nitroblue-tetrazolium (N.B.T.) test has been studied as an index of bacterial infection in nineteen uræmic patients maintained on regular hæmodialysis over a 3-month period. There was a significant rise in the N.B.T. score during dialysis. Since the pre-dialysis N.B.T. scores correlated well with systemic bacterial infection, postdialysis scores were unnecessary. Bacterial infection subsequently developed in 50% of patients with high pre-dialysis scores.
