Abstract
Intermittent mechanical ventilation is reviewed with respect to its history and the treatment of respiratory muscle dysfunction. Various devices from diaphragm movers and phrenic pacers to negative pressure and positive pressure ventilators are described. The basis for clinical efficacy, considerations for use, and a literature review with a summary of outcome of 71 patients with diverse causes for respiratory failure are discussed.
