Intensive Care after Transcatheter Aortic Valve Replacement

Research output: Chapter in Book/Report/Conference proceedingChapterpeer-review

Abstract

Given the increasing trends of transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR) application worldwide, foundational principles of post-procedural care learned in intensive care units (ICU) make safer practices and are of paramount importance for favorable clinical outcomes at an institution level. The present chapter reviews the current TAVR field from an ICU point of view. It outlines the Objectives of Intensive Care after TAVR, starting from the Hand-Over from procedure to ICU and the Structure of Post-TAVR Care. Important aspects include the astute recognition and management of Acute Hemodynamic Changes and Disorders of Blood Pressure, development of bleeding and anemia, vascular complications, stroke and conduction abnormalities. Not only are all important to treat, but also important to exclude in an organized and timely fashion in order to achieve early patient mobilization and discharge.
