Abstract
Transfusion-transmitted infections are presented with the focus on epidemiology and donor screening procedures. Problems in laboratory testing are described along with the comparative risk of different components and derivatives. General measures to decrease the risk of transfusion-acquired infections are discussed. Specific blood selection recommendations are made for patients susceptible to morbidity from cytomegalovirus infections.
