N1 - Funding Information: detailed necropsy examination of their hearts. The accuracy-rate of E.C.G. diagnosis, using accepted criteria, fell from 82 % where infarction was acute to 27% where there was a single old infarct. Where multiple old in- farctions were present, the accuracy-rate rose to 58%, but the overall accuracy-rate was only 48%. In only 1 of the cases with a non-diagnostic E.c.G. was the tracing considered to be normal. All the rest showed lesser changes, which are thought to be of considerable value, but do not necessarily distinguish salient infarction from microscopic fibrosis. From the epidemiological point of view the E.C.G. appears to be a useful method of estimating the incidence of coronary-artery disease in well-nourished populations, provided due regard is paid to the lesser signs of cardiac damage. We wish to thank the Canadian Life Insurance Officers’ Associa- tion and the staff of the University of Alberta Hospital, in particular Prof. J. H. Stirrat, for their assistance with the Canadian side of this paper. For the work done in Australia we are greatly indebted to Dr. L. Henzell, commissioner of public health, Western Australia, and to the superintendent and pathology staff of Fremantle Hospital, and to Dr. E. Bean, the coroner’s surgeon. We wish to thank Dr. W. Evans for his helpful criticism of the paper. One of us (J. D. W.) is in receipt of a grant from the Australian National Heart Foundation.
