Abstract
Research sponsored by the lighting industry has been highly successful in developing reliable, inexpensive products. Although government-sponsored lighting research is mainly oriented toward developing general principles, it has been a valuable, though somewhat inefficient, partner to the lighting industry. The efficiency of this loosely structured partnership could be improved by introducing a stronger element of profit motive into government research programs. If the lighting industry invested selectively, and on a small scale, into specific government-sponsored projects, the research programs could be steered in directions more clearly relevant to them. Joint venture of this type can establish the necessary balance between principles and profits that has been missing in lighting research.
