Abstract

A product made by growing group A streptococci, which are involved in the pathogenesis of rheumatic fever (RF), has been shown to be mitogenic for lymphocytes. This effect appears to be controlled by a major gene locus linked to HLA. The aim of this study was to evaluate this streptococcal mitogen (SM) (A) for its blastogenic activity for lymphocytes from subjects with a history of RF and (B) for its ability to induce expression of Ia-like antigens on human T lymphocytes.
