In vitro production of testosterone sulfate from progesterone-4-¹⁴C in an adrenal tumor

Slices from the central portion of a virilizing tumor removed from a four year old female were incubated with progesterone-4- ¹⁴C. Analysis of the methylene chloride extract did not result in the isolation of radioactive free testosterone. However, following further extraction for conjugated material, a radioactive substance was isolated which behaved as testosterone sulfate. After ethyl acetate solvolysis of this material a radioactive active compound was recovered which has been identified as free testosterone.
