Abstract
“Dysglycemia” is a term that encompasses the progressive impairment of glucose regulation from insulin resistance to type 2 diabetes, which are well-established metabolic drivers for cardiovascular disease. “Dysglycemia based chronic disease” (DBCD) is a disease progression model intended to provide early and sustainable preventive actions to retard or even eliminate dysglycemia progression and consequences, mitigating disease burden, cost, and related suffering. Although lifestyle medicine is widely described in guidelines, there is a gap between knowledge and action; this is why there is an urgent need to translate theory into practice. We describe sustainable patient-centered tactics to decrease DBCD burden and improve dysglycemia care by focusing on lifestyle interventions. The proposed tactics consider ethnocultural factors, social determinants of health, and biopsychosocial factors. Lifestyle interventions can be done from individual levels, in specialized lifestyle centers with a multidisciplinary approach, to community or national levels, targeting hundreds of thousands of individuals at risk. Besides, wearable technologies have been shown to improve dysglycemia care, presenting now as a promising strategy to promote innovative lifestyle interventions.
