Abstract

Subacromial impingement syndrome is a spectrum of pathology involving the structures of the subacromial space, ranging from subacromial bursitis to rotator cuff tendinopathy, and, ultimately, can lead to degenerative partial and full-thickness tears of the rotator cuff (Neer, J Bone Joint Surg Am 54(1):41–50, 1972). Subacromial impingement syndrome and acromioclavicular arthritis are common sources of shoulder pain for which nonoperative management is typically successful. Surgery is reserved for those who do not respond to nonoperative modalities.
