Abstract
BACTERIAL infections promote hyperglycemia and impaired glucose tolerance in normal persons,1,2 or increase insulin requirements of diabetic patients. This study was designed to determine the effect of a mild, self-limited viral illness, sandfly fever,3,4 on glucose tolerance in man and to document concomitant dynamic alterations in several glucoregulatory hormones. Materials and Methods Subjects and Protocol Ten healthy, nonobese men, 21 to 24 years of age, were admitted to a metabolic ward, each having given informed consent.* A 300-g carbohydrate diet was maintained throughout the study. After 3 days, a base-line intravenous glucose tolerance test (GTT) was performed with 30 g.
