Abstract

More than any other area within gastroenterology, knowledge of the causes, evaluation, prognosis and treatment of the inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD) has burgeoned in a remarkable way. A search of the medical literature tells this story clearly. Between 1988 and 2003, the number of publications per year on IBD has more than doubled. For clinicians, this explosion of information presents a challenge. How can a busy practitioner hope to keep up with progress at such a pace? The ever-evolving state of this field dictates that clinicians develop an approach to finding and judging this wealth of information. The following is intended to be a practical guide for the busy clinician who wishes to keep abreast of the IBD literature.
