Caregiving has a lifelong impact on individuals who provide hands-on assistance and emotional support for a loved one. The effects of serious illness ripple through families and affect physical and mental health, family function, financial stability, and social relationships. Assessments of the caregiving experience that take into account both disease process and disease stage are an important step in supporting the unique needs of each caregiver. This chapter addresses current research that examines the impact of providing care for those with serious illness and at the end of life across multiple domains.
