HIV related liver diseases

With this improvement in the treatment of HIV and AIDS, other sequelae of HIV are coming to the forefront, such as HIV related liver diseases. These diseases are associated with significant morbidity as well and constitute approximately 7-18% of deaths in the HIV population. They can often lead to accelerated fibrosis and cirrhosis and subsequent development of HCC, with the possible need for transplant. Most of the liver pathology associated with HIV is caused by diseases present in the general population, however with an increased risk of significant liver damage and complications in the HIV population. This chapter discusses HIV/HCV co-infection, HIV/HBV co-infection, NAFLD and NASH, HIV associated medication induced liver injury, HIV related causes of non-cirrhotic portal hypertension, infiltrative diseases, as well as HIV related biliary pathology.
