Abstract

With the development of potent and effective antiretroviral therapy (ART), life expectancy for people with HIV (PWH) has increased to the point that HIV is now considered a chronic illness. People with HIV are at increased risk of atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD) compared to the general population due to multiple factors, including traditional risk factors as well as immune activation and chronic inflammation due to HIV infection itself. Dyslipidemia in HIV is an important comorbidity that contributes to increased ASCVD risk in PWH. Low high-density lipoprotein (HDL) with elevated triglycerides (TG) is a common lipid pattern in PWH. Management of dyslipidemia requires close attention to important drug-drug interactions between antiretrovirals (ARV) and statins.
