Abstract

Purpose. To compare images obtained by high frequency (50 MHz), high resolution (50μm) ultrasound biomicroscopy (UBM) with ocular histopathology. Methods. Six eyes of six patients were imaged either prior to excisional biopsy of surface pathology in 2 eyes or after enucleadon in 4 eyes using UBM. Cross sectional UBM images were then compared with microscopic sections taken in similar planes. Results: Final pathological diagnoses in the various specimens included squamous carcinoma and malignant melanoma of the conjunctiva, metastatic transitional cell carcinoma and malignant melanoma of the choroid, serous retinal detachment, traumatically ruptured globe, neovascular angle closure glaucoma, peripheral fibrovascular membrane, and a suprachoroidal hemorrhage. Depth of penetration, internal architecture, angle configuration, and scleral discontinuity and thickness were accurately assessed by this imaging modality. Conclusion: High frequency ultrasound (UBM) allows high resolution imaging of ocular structures which correlate well with histopathological preparation. As additional correlations with pathologic processes are made, this technique may be useful in the management and preoperative assessment of various types of ocular pathology.
