N2 - To the Editor: We read with interest the report on heparin-associated thrombocytopenia by Drs. Bell and Royall in the October 16 issue. Once again, they have reported data showing that the incidence of heparin-associated thrombocytopenia is much higher than that reported by other investigators.1 , 2 In Bell and Royall's study, thrombocytopenia (platelet count, <100×109 per liter) developed in 13 of 50 patients (26 per cent) receiving bovine-lung heparin, four of 45 patients (9 per cent) receiving intestinal-mucosa A heparin, and four of 54 patients (7 per cent) receiving intestinal-mucosa O heparin. At the Cleveland Clinic we have studied prospectively 200 patients.
