Abstract

Hemodialysis access failure is a leading cause of hospitalization among patients with end stage renal disease. The traditional endovascular approach is to directly puncture the fistula or graft. However, this often requires both antegrade and retrograde access, and the outflow must be compressed directly to achieve hemostasis. A transradial arterial access can simplify positioning and often allows the operator to work in-line at all parts of an upper-extremity dialysis access. In the limited studies to date, this approach has been shown to be as safe and effective as traditional dialysis intervention access.
