Abstract

Head trauma (or head injury) includes the full spectrum of injury to the head, from superficial contusions, abrasions, and lacerations of the soft tissues that overlie the cranium, to injuries deep within the skull. The vast majority of patients who present to the emergency department (ED) with head trauma have blunt trauma or closed head injury, which is the focus of this chapter.
