Abstract

The reactions of Schiff bases (L), derived from the condensation of acetylferrocene with ethylenediamine, o-phenylenediamine, 4-methyl-o-phenylenediamine, 1,8-diaminonaphthalene and 2,6-diaminopyridine, with hafnium tetrachloride and bis(cyclopentadienyl)hafnium(IV) dichloride have been studied in refluxing benzene/THF. The derivatives [HfCl4(L)] and [Cp2HfCl(L)]Cl have been isolated and characterized by elemental analyses, molar conductance, UV/Vis, IR and 1H NMR. The ligands are bidentate species and coordinate to the central hafnium ion by the two nitrogens. Suggested structures for the complexes are reported.
