I was given a position as a senior research fellow, initially at the University of Toronto, and then I soon applied for a grant to the MRC, which was funded. I recently reread my original application. I'm afraid it was just terrible, but they gave me the money.”

RV: “It was sponsored by the World Health Organization but primarily paid for by drug companies. We spoke in about 10 different places in Southeast Asia. All eight of us. We would give a whole day of the same talks. It turned out that, by the end, I could have given all of the other seven talks!”
