Abstract
Global mental health is an area of study, research, and practice that emphasizes improving mental health and achieving mental health access for everyone. It reflects an ambitious public health oriented agenda that strives to apply all that psychiatry has to offer to all people, in all places. This chapter examines international psychiatric practice in low- and middle-income countries as well as psychiatry in disaster-stricken communities and addresses any health practitioner who finds her/himself working in such settings, with two overarching objectives: first, to convince you why it is important to include mental health in your global health practice; and second, to help you figure out how to do so.
