Abstract

This chapter contains safety tips applicable to most procedures. Gather all materials in advance to avoid improvisation or intraoperative delays. Keep the surgical tray within reach and organized, with materials out of their wrappers. Do not use uncontrolled force to assemble, disassemble, or operate a device. Discard non-functional or broken equipment rather than trying to fix them. Keep the stock bottles off the surgical stand and closed when not in use. Be present in the moment while operating. Do not operate when tired, hungry, or rushed. Avoid using fingers instead of forceps to grasp or support tissue. Do not perform procedures on standing patients. Avoid doing procedures without an assistant present. Avoid performing procedures outside of your skill set. Never handoff sharps; rather, place them in a neutral zone for retrieval. Do not catch a falling instrument; let it drop. Do not compress overflowing garbage with your hands. Sift through dirty trays in search of sharps with forceps rather than fingers.
