Abstract

A question and answer session on general processing and support operations sponsored by NPRA in 1995 covers the criteria used in the definition and selection of opportunity crudes; special handling used for preparation/pretreatment of crudes prior to the crude distillation column; downstream operating problems associated with crudes; differences between the various polymer treating options used in desalter applications; new developments in the dehydration of heavy crude prior to desalting; current experience with operating changes and equipment installed upstream of the waste water treatment plant to meet benzene NESHAP regulations; reducing caustic usage in the refinery and new innovative methods of spent caustic disposal or reuse; and approaches to minimize slop oil generation and reprocessing and treating methods.
