title = "Function and metabolism of the protease inhibitor-containing Alzheimer amyloid precursors",
abstract = "Antisera against specific sequences of the Alzheimer B-amyloid precursor protein (BAPP) were used to study the expression, metabolism and function of this protein in mammalian brain tissue and cell cultures. Our results indicate that the amyloid precursors are differentially expressed in different mammalian brains and suggest that in the human brain the Kunitz protease inhibitor (KPI)-containing BAPP is predominantly present in the cortex. In nerve growth factor (NGF)-stimulated PC12 cell cultures the KPI-BAPP was present on the neuronal processes and growth cones of the extending neurities. This BAPP subtype is secreted by PC12 cells in response to treatment by either NGF or EGF, and functions as promoter of neurite outgrowth.",
