Abstract

Advances in the understanding of the pathophysiology of ischemic neuronal death have led to the development of new approaches to treating acute stroke. Concurrently technologic advances have permitted application of older approaches in a more sophisticated manner. These advances herald an era in which rapid, precisive evaluation and treatment of the patient with acute stroke may dramatically alter prognosis. This article reviews some of these advances.
