Abstract

Diseases of the renal system are typically difficult to treat due to the inherent complexity of the organ. A key cell type is the podocyte, which is gaining interest as a key regulator of filtration and potentially central to various kidney dysfunctions. The Drosophila nephrocyte has marked similarities to the mammalian podocyte and proximal tubules, serving similar filtration and regulatory functions. While still in the early days of characterization, the nephrocyte shows promise as an accessible tool for exploring podocyte function in homeostasis and disease. This review examines our current understanding of nephrocyte function and assembly.
