Abstract

Fish flesh is the main protein source for traditional populations in the Northern Region of Brazil. This paper describes the contamination by DDT in the fish biota of this region, which is covered by the largest tropical rain forest of the world, where malaria is an endemic disease. This organochlorine insecticide was heavily used against malaria in Brazil between 1945 and 1997.
