Abstract

Eyelid opening apraxia is defined as the inability to initiate and sustain eyelid opening in the absence of visible orbicularis oculi contraction. It is typically associated with frontalis muscle contraction and intermittent spontaneous eye opening. Despite its name, it is not a true apraxia since there is electrophysiologic evidence of abnormal eyelid muscle function. It is commonly associated with benign essential blepharospasm, progressive supranuclear palsy, other movement disorders, or medications.
