Abstract

From the estimated number of candidate patients for heart transplantation at a maximum of 60,000 per year, only 2,000 receive a transplant due to inherent factors involving advanced age and the coexistence of some diseases. The primary objective of this study is to show the feasibility of implanting LVAS in 20 patients for a period of two years. LVAS recipients in this study is not limited to a population of patients who would have been excluded from transplantation due to the stated factors. Like wise the study is not designed to evaluate the LVAS only in patients who are transplant candidates. Although the clinical arm of this trial has not been tested, it is hoped that the study presented will be useful in preparation for future studies.
