Abstract

This chapter discusses the background, prevention, diagnosis, treatment, and prognosis for recurrent infections in adults. The immune system is composed of a large network of cells and organs working together. As strong immunity is so important for health, nature has provided a number of overlapping immune systems to cope with an entire range of microbes. As the immune system is also important to control infections, loss of some of these controls can result in various types of infectious diseases. Recurrent infections can be brought about by many other causes, and these should be eliminated in any investigation so that best treatments can be instituted. Adults with chronic, recurrent, or acute infections may have a primary or secondary immune defect. The diagnostic strategies include blood tests aimed at investigating the various compartments of the immune system.
