Abstract
Mean Epstein‐Barr virus antibody was not significantly elevated in sera from 50 patients with systemic lupus erythematosus compared to 50 age‐ and sex‐matched blood donor controls. As shown previously for measles and parainfluenza type 1 antibodies, there was a significant direct correlation between Epstein‐Barr virus antibody and IgG levels. The variable elevations of virus antibodies found so far in systemic lupus erythematosus probably result from hyperactivity of the humoral immune system.
