Abstract
DVT is a multifactorial disease influenced by environmental and genetic risk factors. Identifying modifiable risk factors in patients and applying early thromboprophylaxis will reduce morbidity and mortality associated with DVT. Further investigations are needed to determine which subgroups of acutely ill medical patients will benefit from extended prophylaxis. Similarly, in patients with cancer, the optimal DVT prevention strategy has yet to be determined.
