Abstract
Rare earth (RE) fluoride fibers were synthesized by polymer-supported electrospinning combining two subsequent thermal treatments. One-dimensional (1D) structure was maintained after the fibers were heated. The treated fibers, which were usually several millimeters long, consisted of closely-packed crystalline grains. Pumped with a 980 nm laser, Yb 3+ and Tm 3+ codoped YF 3 fibers exhibited intense upconversion (UC) fluorescence.
