Abstract

Older adults who are homebound may be at higher risk of abuse or neglect due to isolation and dependence on family to remain in the community. We present a case of Mr. B, a patient who is homebound with multiple medical conditions, who has family members who are suspected of using the patient’s limited finances for their own needs. Various options are available to tackle this issue in the community. Options for team and family meetings, guardianship, and legal involvement are all considered. Local services are also used in order to help manage Mr. B’s finances. Continued psychosocial and medical assessments are essential in order to best address the challenges of Mr. B’s ongoing care needs and potential financial abuse.
