Abstract

The effect of chlorpropamide or phenformin on blood glucose and serum insulin-like activity (ILA) was investigated in patients with various degrees of carbohydrate tolerance. Blood glucose and ILA were measured fasting and 3 hours after an oral glucose load before and after therapy had been instituted. Both chlorpropamide and phenformin produced improvement in carbohydrate tolerance, and in each patient the fall in glucose concentration was accompanied by a decrease in previously elevated levels of ILA.
