Abstract

To the Editor: My colleagues and I are very pleased to note that so many investigators1 2 3 4 have been able to confirm our original observation5 that clofibrate depresses the plasma level of alkaline phosphatase. In our study, describing the hypolipidemic and other metabolic effects of clofibrate in man, we observed that a normal clinical dose of clofibrate (2 g daily) lowered alkaline phosphatase by an average of 30 to 35 per cent in otherwise normal hyperlipidemic subjects. Because technics for determining the sources of plasma alkaline phosphatase were then in their infancy, we were unable to establish with certainty which.
