Abstract

Aim. A review of education in geriatric medicine in the USA. Methods. Literature related to the past five years was identified through a Medline search. All levels of education, from medical schools to postgraduate and faculty training, were analyzed. Results. Geriatrics is a young field in the USA. Training in medical schools is mostly elective. It has only recently become a mandatory part of specialty training in internal medicine and family practice. Fellowship training is available to candidates from both fields. There is a shortage of faculty trained in geriatrics, which limits training on all levels. Conclusion. In order to meet the challenge imposed by the aging population geriatrics training should to be strongly promoted on all levels.
