Abstract
Atopic dermatitis is a form of eczema that affects approximately 10% of the population. It generally begins in early infancy, and is characterized by extreme pruritus, a chronically relapsing course, and a distinctive distribution. Despite years of debate and persistent dissent, most evidence indicates that food hypersensitivity plays a significant pathogenic role in up to 40% of children with moderate to severe atopic dermatitis. Appropriate evaluation and management of patients with moderate to severe atopic dermatitis should include an investigation for possible food allergies.
