Abstract

The isokinetic strength of the quadriceps muscles during eccentric contractions with surface electrical stimulation was determined. The peak strength of paralyzed muscle during lengthening contractions was observed to be in excess of twice that for concentric contractions at the same velocity and stimulus parameters. Over the entire range of motion, electrically induced eccentric contractions were an average of approximately 90% stronger than concentric contractions. Variations between repeated tests of the same leg were less than 20% and left and right legs were symmetrical to within 30%. The eccentric strength of electrically stimulated muscles of the lower extremity is directly applicable to the restoration of standing or walking function to paralyzed individuals.
